Prominant Victorian owner/breeder Bob Scarborough was back in the winners' circle in the US at the weekend following yet another stakes victory for Mauralakana in the Group Two New York Stakes at Belmont. Since transferring to Christophe Clement after being bought by Bob Scarborough last year, Mauralakana has been in rare form winning four of five starts and finishing second at her only other appearance. On this occasion she did best in a driving finish to win by a neck and in doing so attained millionaire status, her overall record an impressive 10 wins and six placings from 26 starts with earnings of $1,013,276. Mauralakana was purchased on behalf of Bob Scarborough by Grant Pritchard Gordon at the 2007 Keenland November Breeding Stock Sale for $900,000. A half-sister to another stakes-winner in Petit Calva, Mauralakana is from the Double Bed mare Jimkana, who is a full sister to the former well-travelled galloper Jim and Tonic. Jim and Tonic is well known to Australians as he won a couple of high profile races in Hong Kong and also defeated Fairy King Prawn and Sunline in the Dubai Duty Free in Dubai. |
