The region has produced Melbourne Cup winners, Champion Stallions, Leading Breeders and is renowned for raising, preparing and selling some of Australia’s best racehorses.

The region experiences an ideal climate for producing quality stock, with warmer weather in the winter months than that experienced further south, and excellent average rainfall during those months.

An easy 90-minute drive North East from Melbourne, the region is an ideal location as Victoria’s thoroughbred homeland, which has and will continue to produce some of Australia’s top stallions due to a perfect blend of climate and knowledge.

Integral to any region is the available services for those inhabiting the area and this is one of the biggest strengths for this region. The area is renowned for its veterinarian services (Dr Angus McKinnon - Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital, see Our Members - Other Services) as well as a variety of ancillary services for the thoroughbred industry such as: Fencing, feed merchants, transport companies, Accountants, freeze branding and horse supplies.

The area is also surrounded by attractions such as world-renowned wineries, river systems and the Mangalore Airport.

Victoria is the industry leader in country racing, with higher average prizemoney of anywhere in Australia with a number of racetracks located in the nearby vicinity, including Seymour, Bendigo, Kilmore, Benalla, Echuca and Wangaratta.
